What is Pilates

We understand that Pilates may seem daunting, especially because of the equipment we utilize in our classes, but that’s only because a lot of people don’t really understand what it is and what’s involved in it.

Pilates was created by Joseph Pilates, a gymnast and carpenter. He opened up the first Pilates studio in New York in 1926. While his version of Pilates involved 34 fundamental exercises developed to help injured dancers and soldiers, the current practice of Pilates remains true to his teachings.

Now, there are six key principles involved in the practice: control, concentration, powerhouse-centring, breathing, precision, and flow.

Pilates works on strengthening your body, focusing on core strength. While classes usually consist of low-impact moves, this doesn’t mean that this exercise won’t be difficult. Technique is very important in Pilates. Moves may be slow, but they must be precise. You will notice that it is the element of control which is emphasized in classes. Even breathing must be controlled!

Pilates will target several muscle groups at the same time. While the focus is on core strength, your hips, your thighs, and your back will also be challenged.
